Common Equipment - Unconventional Results

For the most part, Camarillo Observatory uses common, off-the-shelf equipment, identical to that owned by thousands of high schools, colleges and amateur astronomers across the globe.  What makes us different?  How is it possible to take such simple equipment and produce results that exceed some of the largest observatories in the world?  The secret lies in the simplicity of the design (reliability), integration of the equipment (hooking everything up) and high degree of automation (control software that minimizes human intervention).

Here we have a block diagram that depicts the operation of a typical observing session.  All observing is conducted from within a well-lit, indoor room, called the "warm room".  Click on a picture for more detailed information.
